Obituary for GLADYS ELIZABETH HARROD
Softly and tenderly God called our beloved mother Gladys Elizabeth Savoy Harrod to her eternal rest on Wednesday, December 9, 2015, about 12:03 p.m. at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC.
Gladys was born in Washington, DC, June 23, 1939, to the late Robert and the late Helen Savoy. She was their second child. She received her education in the Charles County Maryland Public School System.
Gladys was baptized at Bethel Way of the Cross Church in Huntingtown, Maryland, under the leadership of the late Bishop Jacob Green. She sang on the Senior Choir.
On December 12, 1959, she was united in marriage to the late Charles William Harrod, Sr. This holy union lasted a beautiful 41 year s. They were blessed with eight children: Brenda, Charles "Chuck," Jr., Jacqueline "Jackie," Hilton, Sr., Kathy, David, Garry, and Michael "Timmy."
Early in life, Gladys developed a good work ethic. She often said that she loved to work and to be productive. She was employed as a Cook at the Calvert House Nursing Home and was a Housekeeper at Trinity United Methodist Church in Prince Frederick, Maryland. She also was a loyal worker in the Housekeeping Department at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick for 25 years. Affectionately known as "Apple" and "Apps," Gladys was a quiet, humble, and loving person. She was willing to help anybody. She loved baking cakes for people and talking to people on the phone. Her favorite TV programs included "The Waltons," "Little House on the Prairie," and old cowboy shows. Most of all, she loved family gatherings.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sisters: Pearl Wade, Margaret "Margie" Hill, and Bernice "Ann" Hoban; and her brother Robert "Buck, "Jr.
Gladys leaves to cherish her precious memories five sons; three daughters; twelve grandchildren: Danielle, Lekesha, Terrill, Latoya, Travis, Dominque, Martel, Jacob Green, Hilton, Jr., Shoron, Lamar, Dayvon, and TJ; six great-grandchildren: De'Jour, Asani, Jamara, Tanyia, Madison, Taraya; an uncle, Lemuel Harrod; a sister, Annie Lee Woodland; six sisters-in-law: Arlene Brooks, June Holland, Goldie Harrod, Marion Brooks, Darlene and Carlene Harrod; and five brothers-in-law: Ralph Hoban, Joseph Woodland, Alphonso Brooks, Harry Harrod, and Glenwood Brooks; adopted mother, Juanita Jones; adopted sons: Chester Hawkins, Dwight Harrod, and Frank Harrod; adopted daughters: Judith Plater and Regina Jones; a special private caregiver, Constance James; and longtime special friends: Gertrude Brooks, Rachel Mackall, Doris Wade, Mary White, Chester and Annie Mackall, Robert and Gloria Jean Herbert, Dianne and Richard Sewell and Elizabeth Willett; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
