April 25, 1938 May 30, 2018
There are condolences waiting approval on GERTRUDE's Tribute wall
GERTRUDE VIRGINIA BOURNE-WHITBY, the first child of Henrietta V. Bourne and William L. Bourne was born April 25, 1938 in Calvert County, Maryland.

Gertrude was brought up serving the Lord. She attended Brooks U.M. Church under the
pastoral leadership of the late Rev. Sharpison, Rev. Carroll, and Rev. Mason. During Gertrude's early young adult years, she became the first musician for the Utopians Choral Singers. She graced this group and many listeners with her love and passion for music.

Gertrude graduated from William Sampson Brooks High School in 1956. In 1958 Gertrude
moved to Washington, D.C. for a short period of time where she resided with her Aunt Mary
Bourne-Coates. By 1959 Gertrude had made her way to the State of Connecticut where she
met the love of her life, Martin L. Whitby, Jr. They were joined in Holy Matrimony on May 16,
1971 in Norwalk, Connecticut. Gertrude and Martin made their home in Stamford, Connecticut
where they remained as husband and wife until Martin's death in October 1995.

While living in Connecticut, Gertrude found a new church home at Bethel African Methodist
Episcopal Church in Stamford. She was spiritually guided under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Donald C. Luster and Rev. Winton M. Hill, Ill.

Gertrude made many new friends while living in Connecticut. She met her best friend Hattie
and other dear friends such as Rose Marie and Grace. We all heard so many stories of Hattie
that kept us in laughter.

In 1983 Gertrude became a member of the Deborah Chapter O.E.S. #21 Prince Hall in Norwalk, Connecticut. She served as Worthy Matron from 1986 to 1989. She also served as a member of the Rehab Court #4, Prince Hall in Stamford.

Gertrude had a jolly personality. Her love for laughter and smiles lead her to a career as a
secretary, receptionist/hostess for Southfield Community Center, Chester Addison Center, and
The Singer Company in Stamford.

Although Gertrude did not have biological kids of her own, she treated her nieces and nephews as if they were her children. She had a special love for Amber, Christopher and Cedric because she and Martin took them into their home as babies and raised them through their early childhood lives.

In 2004 Gertrude returned to Calvert County, where she resided with her sister Olive. Once
again, Gertrude remained true to serving the Lord. She transferred her church membership to
Mt. Olive U.M. Church in 2005 under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Robert L. Conway where
she became a member of the Mt. Olive Senior Choir.

Gertrude lived with Olive until August 2009. Due to her health she found a new home at the
Asbury Nursing Home in Solomons. There she immediately became nurse and friend to many
of the patients. In 2012 Gertrude was moved to the Calvert County Nursing Home in Prince
Frederick where she remained until the morning of May 30, 2018, when she heard her call to
come to her new home, a home not made by hands.

Gertrude was proceeded in death by her husband, Martin; her mother, Henrietta and father,
William; her sister, Marilyn; brother-in-law, Lester Harris; nephew, Michael Harris; and great
nephew, Rodney Gray.

Gertrude leaves to cherish her memory: her siblings, Mae, Clinton (Maude), Olive, Marietta
(Kenneth), and Gary. Three brothers-in-law, Ulysses, Charles, and Michael Whitby; one sister-in-law, Erma Webb; one aunt, Mary Bourne; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
