Obituary for GERALDINE ELIZABETH JEFFERSON

Geraldine Elizabeth Johnson was born on Friday, January 31. 1947 to the Late Clarence Johnson and Carrie Wallace. Geraldine was the second of thirteen children from this union. On Tuesday, January 30, 2018, God in his divine wisdom, called Geraldine home, from labor to reward. Just one day shy of her 71st birthday, Geraldine left behind the cares of this world to be in the presence of Almighty God. As a young teen, Geraldine learned to cook, under her mother's tutelage, clean and to care for her siblings. Always willing to help others, Geraldine once walked over two miles with her mother to work in the tobacco field. A job deemed hard work to others proved to be nothing for Geraldine, who was determined to make ends meet for her family.

On October 15. 1969, Geraldine wed her sweetheart Floyd Jefferson. From this union, God blessed them with four children, all who prided themselves on being their mother's favorite. Geraldine, whose name translates to rule with a spear, always the disciplinarian, took great pride in raising her children in a God-fearing home. Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6. As with any family, the children would fuss and fight but at the end of the day, they remembered that they were indeed their brother's keeper and should always have each other's back.

For many years, Geraldine was employed as a Room Checker at the Holiday Inn Select in Solomons, Maryland. During this time, she worked diligently ensuring that every room in her assigned area was ready for guests to enjoy. She had no problems sending you back into a room if she felt it was not cleaned to her standards. What joy was it for her to go to work every day and hang with her friends, Valerie Carr, Essie Jacks and Celeste Weems. Geraldine could often be seen walking the hallways with her best friend, Irene Clark You would rarely see one without the other. As grandma would say, they were for a good time.

In her spare time, Geraldine. affectionately known as Jerry to family, enjoyed completing puzzles, shopping, dancing, playing cards (but never on a Sunday) and spending time with family. We most certainly will miss hearing her constantly reminding us that "you're not the boss of me", "you are not my equal" and yelling at us to "stop all that hollering". Geraldine was sometimes a woman of few words who had no problems getting her point across nor telling you like it was.

Geraldine was a faithful member of the Greater Bible Way Church where she gave her life to Christ under the leadership of the Late Bishop Henry H. Brown and later served under Apostle Joe Nathan Brown and Co-Pastors Neil and Delethian Gross. Geraldine was a member of the Faithful Workers Club, Missionary Board, Gospel Choir and served in the kitchen with her sisters. Geraldine continued to press her way to church until her health would not allow. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills. from whence cometh my help. Psalms 121:1.

Through the 70 years that God has blessed us with Geraldine. Her strong will and determination will continue to live on through her many family and friends. She has touched the lives of so many and we are forever grateful to have known such a great woman of God.

Geraldine leaves to cherish her memories: her children, Phyllis Jefferson Maxine Gross (Sheldon), Floyd, Jr. (Katina) and Angel Smith (Robert); honorary son, Michael "Mikey" Gross, grandchildren: Terrence, Jemark, Sheldon, Floyd ”Davon”, Travonta, Moriah, Camari. Dakari and Kamren; great-grandchildren: Elijah, Yashar and Josiah; mother-in-law, Ms. Ollie Joppy; sisters, Doris Ann Weems (Stewart), Margaret Gantt, Irene Harris, Madeline Gantt.
