Obituary for GERALDINE ELIZABETH HARRIS
Geraldine Elizabeth Harris was born on February 12, 1932 in Calvert County, to the late Johanna Irene Carr and Warren Chase. She departed this life Friday, May 29, 2020, 2:00 p.m. at Forestville Healthcare Rehabilitation Center in Forestville, Maryland. Geraldine, affectionally known as “Mumma” to her family and “Ger” to her friends was a native and lifelong Calvert County resident. She attended and gained her education in the Calvert County Public School system. On April 1, 1950, Geraldine was united in marriage to Hugh Ward Harris, better known as “Cutie”. He was the love of her life. They spent many years with their eleven children, working together raising tobacco, gardening and tending to the farm animals. After a full day of work, she would always take time to ensure the family had a home cooked meal. Mumma will be always be remembered for her infectious smile and laugh and one who cared for her family. She especially enjoyed family holiday gatherings. The family could guarantee that she and Baby Sis would cook food for an Army, but still expected everyone to bring their special dish. Her plan was to make sure everyone had enough to eat plus a plate to take home. Mumma had a way of saying what was on her mind, whether you wanted to hear it or not. It was her way of showing tough love. Some of her famous sayings were “Y’all know that ain’t right”; “Don’t let that fire go out in the stove”; “Those children are always showing off”; “Don’t worry about me worry ‘bout yourself”; “Don’t call me no hammer”; and “Don’t question God’s work”. If you got it wrong, watch out for the elbow! In the early 1990s, Geraldine joined The Solid Rock Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc., in Port Republic, Maryland, under the pastoral leadership of Elder Andrew Harrod. She was a faithful member, attending church whenever she could and serving wherever she was needed. Her favorite scripture was “I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall be continually be in my mouth.” Psalm 34:1 KJV. Preceding in her death was one son, Hugh Jr.; her husband Hugh “Cutie” Harris, Sr.; mother, Johanna Carr; sister, Catherine Freeland; daughter, Marion Gray; grandsons, Sylvester Gray and Rayshawn Harris; four brothers-in-law, Edward, Phillip, James and George Harris; two sisters-in-law Isabelle and Marie Harris. Geraldine leaves fond memories to her brother Oscar Gray (Ida); her children Alice Height; Jeraldine Harris; Earl Sr. (Trula); Clarence (Sheila); Stanley (Lorraine); Carl (Althelia); Joeann Jones (Bobby); Leonard (Starlette); Maurice (Roxanne); Milton (Donna); twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren; a special niece Rebecca “Becky” Randall; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
