Obituary for GENIOUS PAUL GORMAN, SR.
Genious Paul Gorman Sr. was born on February 18, 1940 to the late Warren and Ada Jones Gorman in Parran, Maryland (Huntingtown). He was given many names by family and friends: Gene, Genie Paul, Paul, Pauly, Geno, Pop, Poppie, Pop-Pop, Honey, Daddy, Dad, Granddaddy, Granddad, Grand-Pop, Bro, Unc, Warren and the most important was given by God, “Faithful Servant,” on November 28, 2018.
Genious was educated in Calvert County Public Schools and graduated from William Sampson Brooks High School. He enjoyed mathematics and journalism. Paul was an entrepreneur selling chewing gum at school which made a huge profit so much so he was able to loan money to the teachers. He had a very strong work ethic along with being on time, it was crucial for him. As a child, his father would tell him “the early bird catches the worm and if you leave before time you will never be late. If you do your work right the first time you won’t have to do it a second time.”
Gene was a well-digger and construction worker from 1959 until 2009. He retired from the Local 74 union with a Gold Card. He also volunteered his time for sanitation and recycling as well as being a taxi-cab driver for grandkids, friends, neighbors and family members. He was an all-around handyman willing to serve the community with a smile and love. Over 60 years ago, Genie Paul met his high school sweetheart, Betty Ann Weems. They married and out of that union, three children were born. He had lots of medical issues throughout his life with asthma at the age of three years old. The doctor gave him up on several occasions but God had the final word in the name of Jesus. He had 36 years of sobriety and thanking God for one day at a time in Jesus Name, Amen! Pauly was baptized on March 24, 2004 in Jesus Name. He became a greeter at Plum Point United Methodist Church standing tall with a beautiful smile and warm embrace. It was a pleasure for him to serve God and his people showing love and kindness. Pop was an exceptionally devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather who was faithful, selfless, great provider, encourager and listener. He loved his God and family with his whole heart. Even at the end of his sickness, he was still able to praise and thank God with his mouth and hands in Jesus Name, Amen!
Pop-Pop’s hobbies were collecting convertible cars, leisure vans and pick-up trucks. He enjoyed softball games. Back in the day he was a member of the Blue Devils softball team, he was the slow ball pitcher. He enjoyed watching the Washington Redskins football games, feeding wildlife which consisted of crows, birds, squirrels, rabbits, deer, dogs and cats. They all loved him as their father waiting patiently for their daily food. His favorite TV shows were game shows, comedies, courts, westerns, life time movies and Fox 5 news morning and night. Every day the news was mandatory.
Proceeded in death were his parents, Warren and Ada Gorman, great granddaughter, Honesty Gorman, adopted children, Barbara Bishop, Eugene Parran, Sr., sister, Mattie Gorman, father and mother-in-law, Maurice and Addie Weems, sister-in-law, Ruth Mae McRae, brother- in- law, William Edward Weems, Sr., a special childhood friend, Russell Reid, Jr., and other friends, Sterling Holland, and Lawrence Jones.
