Obituary for GENEVA LAVENIA COATES

Geneva Lavenia (Rice) Coates was born on May 9, 1930 to the late Robert Jacks and Emma Rice in Paris, Maryland. She departed this life peacefully on June 21, 2015. Geneva spent her childhood in Calvert County, Maryland where she attended grade school and later graduated from Brooks High School. Geneva found Christ at an early age and joined Wards Memorial Methodist Church in Paris, Maryland. She was married to the late Sherman Coates, Sr. and from this union two sons were born.

After moving to Washington, DC in the early 1950s, Geneva became a member of Hemingway Temple AME Church. She was a faithful and dedicated member of Hemingway Temple. She served under the leadership of several pastors, including Rev. Brooks, Rev. Patterson, Rev. Harry Seawright, Rev. Charles Smith, Rev. Dr. Michael Bethea and the current pastor Rev. Thann Young. Geneva was known for her quiet and gentle spirit. She was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. She was always fashionably attired from the hat to the matching shoes and purse. She possessed a spirit of love and peacefulness. Geneva's profession in culinary arts was truly a blessing to all the pastors and members of Hemingway Temple. She not only prepared exquisite meals at the restaurant in which she worked but also blessed her church family as well. She would feed them and afterwards would bless them with mints and butterscotch candies to have during the week.

Geneva participated in several organizations in the church. She was a member of the Edna V. Davis Missionary Society, the Feeding Ministry, and the Pastor's Aide Club. She was also a faithful member of the Flower Guild. Geneva was known to be as fragrant as the flowers she assisted in purchasing. She even blessed others with scented oils so that they could be as aromatic as she was at all times. Geneva was a true beauty and one of the original Divine Divas of Hemingway Temple AME Church.

Geneva was preceded in death by her mother, Emma Rice; father, Robert Jacks; one son, Joseph Coates; four sisters, Marie Jones, Catherine Johnson, Bertina and Clarice Jacks; six brothers, Joseph Randall, Edward, Wilmer, Wilson, Clifton, and Dick Jacks; one brother-in-law, Walter Johnson, Sr.; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Jacks. She leaves to cherish her life and all its memories her son, Sherman Coates, Jr. (Diane); four grandchildren, John (Crystal), Kimberly, Joseph Jr. (LaDonna), Andre; five great grandchildren , John, Jayden, Claudia, Erin, Nicole; five sisters, Nancy, Doris, Ethel, Delores, Mildred; three brothers, Robert, James, Robert; three sisters-in-law, Florence, Judy, and Diane Jacks; God Daughter , Pearl Newlon; special
friends, Seldon and Pinkey Stewart, and Susie who affectionately called her "Mommy"; special niece and caretaker Dorinda Foote and husband Eugene Foote, Sr.; Sidney Jones (Jackie), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She will forever be in our hearts.
