Obituary for GENEST LAWRENCE REED
Genest Reed, Sr. was born on June 15, 1920, to the late Lawrence Reed and Olivia Jones Reed in Willows, Maryland. He departed this life on Thursday, November 26, 2015, at the residence of his granddaughter, Kimberly Wesley, in Severn, Maryland. Kim and her grandfather were very, very close. They loved and adored each other so much. He was Kim's hero. There was nothing they wouldn't have done to make the other person happy. This special bond lasted until his final farewell.
Genest was one of eleven children born to the union of Lawrence and Olivia Reed. Genest attended the public schools of Calvert County, Maryland. His favorite subject was math. He loved working with numbers.
He served in the United States Army from October 16, 1942 to October 26, 1945. During his time in the United States Army, Genest's first military occupational specialty was that of Surgical Technician. His second military occupation was as Private First Class, 152nd 9th Engineer Dump Truck Company. His decorations and citation include the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
After his service discharge from the Army, Genest returned home and worked as a farmer and laborer. His last place of employment was at the Naval Research Laboratory in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland. There, he worked as a lawn maintenance worker and grounds keeper for subcontractors K & M and Meridian. This was done under the umbrella of Operating Engineers Local 3 7. Genest retired from this position and full-time employment at the age of 88.
Many in the county remember him for his side job after retirement. Until age 94, he sold cords of wood at a reasonable rate to those in need.
Genest was joined in holy matrimony to the late Clarice W. Reed on January 19, 1947. Out of this union were born two children: Mary (Peaches) Bannerman and the late G. Sidney Reed.
Some of his hobbies included hunting, raising his beagles, lawn maintenance, gardening, celebrating his birthdays, a good game of poker, and attending baseball games at Camden Yards and Nationals Park. His favorite baseball team was the Orioles. He knew every player by name and the positions they each played. Not only did he love the Orioles, the Baltimore Ravens was his favorite football team.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Clarice W. Reed; two sons, C. Sidney Reed, and Clifton C. Stepney; siblings, Raymond Reed, William Reed, James (Coleman) Reed, Aaron Reed, Jacob Reed, and Sadie Reed Gross.
He leaves many to cherish his loving memory: one daughter, Mary (Peaches) Bannerman of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland; one son, Nelson (Gregory) Jefferson of Breezy Point Beach, Maryland; two sisters, Lillian Moore of Baltimore, Maryland, and Vernell Hartwell of Asbury Park, New Jersey; one aunt, Hortense Brown of Fort Meade, Maryland,• two sisters-in-law, Corine G. Reed, Prince Frederick, Maryland and Clarice R. Hall, Orlando, Florida; five loving grandchildren, Kimberly Wesley, Jeanine Reed, Ricky Reed, Teanna Emerson, and Lucrishaun Munden; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
