Obituary for Florence O. Wilson

Florence Wilson was born on October 12, 1910.  She is the daughter of Sarah Harris Hawkins and James William Hawkins and the fourth born of six children. She also recalled that her mother Sarah said she was so small when she was born that she fit in her hand.  Florence life proves that great and blessed things often come in small packages. She attended elementary school at Hall's Creek and later went to Baltimore to continue her grammar school education at William Alexander School #112. She then attended Douglass High where she was an outstanding student and graduated at the top of her class.  She then went to Bowie State Teachers College from which she graduated third in her class.  Later she attended Hampton State in Virginia.   Florence Wilson was the first person in the family to graduate from college, leading the way for numerous relatives who later followed in her footsteps and continue to do so today. She then returned to Calvert County where she taught at Appeal, Elementary School. She married Patrick Hampton Wilson in 1952.  He was the love of her life, and even at age ninety seven Florence had clear and vivid memories of their love and life together. She often recalled special times, like their many trips to Canada, and Niagara Falls. They were both longtime and devoted members of Coopers Church and generous contributors. Florence was vigilant in paying her tithes though the years although health reasons prevented her from being in attendance.   During World War II, she worked at Glen L. Martin, now known as Martin Marietta. Beginning in the 1950s, she was employed for several years at Fort Holabird Military Base in Maryland.  There she was an outstanding supervisor and employee and received several citations and recognition for her work. Her professional career continued there until she retired in 1974. Florence Wilson was a true angel and a rare and special blessing to all her family and friends.  She would always be there whatever the need, be it major one or simply a word of love and encouragement.   Florence was vigorous, independent and full of life as God gave and maintained her strength. She lived in her house on Grovers Turn Road with her husband Patrick. When he passed on in 1990, she lived there alone until well into her nineties.  As she grew older and as her health began to fade, many family members and friends gave her support, visiting her regularly and offering whatever help they could.  Ultimately, her health prevented her from staying in her home. At this time, she relied very much on her recently deceased sister, Gertrude Williams and her children to assist her.  She moved to Baltimore County where she lived in Woodholme Springs Assisted Living in Pikesville, Maryland.  Later due to health reasons, she was blessed to be accepted at Levindale Geriatric Center and Hospital, an outstanding nursing facility where her sister Gertrude had entered only one year earlier. Florence loved visitors, and loved to give and receive numerous hugs and kisses.  She could often be heard to say upon departure of her guestthank you for coming. I love you.  She always so appreciative of even the smallest gestures of kindness. Florence Wilson had no children of her own, but God made her mother and a true blessing to numerous step and step grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, grand and great grand nieces and nephews. She loved them all and they loved her. After moving to the Baltimore area she relied in a special way on her sisters children: Gloria Lee, Bonita Williams Cooper, Zelda Williams and Gerard Williams.  Florence, we will always have warm and blessed memories of you and a special place of love in our hearts that will be reserved for you forever.
