Obituary for Emma Commodore

Emma Commodore, 94 of Hyattsville, MD, died Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at her residence. She was born April 8, 1914 to the late Cornelius Harrod and the late Julia Wallace Harrod. Emma attended Calvert County Public Schools. Emma was united in holy matrimony to the late William Commodore on May 22, 1930. To this union were born three daughters Virginia, Lucille, and Jacqueline. Emma moved from Calvert County into Prince George's where she lived with an older brother and began her life's work, taking care of the home/families of others. She worked as a Domestic.Emma's involvement in church began at an early age, attending Brown Methodist with her parents and siblings. Following the death of her mother she joined the North Brentwood AME Zion Church under the leadership of Rev. Grayson J. Kelsh. She served faithfully as a deaconess, class leader, member of the Missionary Society, Mamie Dimes Flower Club, and the Thursday Midday Bible Study group.Everyone who knew her came to love her kindness, her spirit and the love she so freely shared with others. Affectionately, she was called Mama, Grandma, Ms. Emma, and "yo miss Emma"(given by Christina). On Sundays she would patiently wait for those of her church family who would address her as Ma Commodore not leaving until she spoke to many or kissing all and sharing special time with her sister in Christ, Ms. Mattie Coleman. She never departed until she had received a hug and a word from her pastor, Rev. Huggins.Emma was lovingly called ma by her in and out adopted children and those who frequently dropped in that came and didn't leave for days, weeks, months, and sometimes years because of the comfort, care and the love they received. Grandma Emma took great pride in her 12 great grandchildren, having attended the graduation of six from high school and one from college. The mother-grandmother-great grandmother gave love and inspiration to all.Emma leaves to mourn her passing a large and supporting family, sister, Maggie Rice, her daughters, Virginia, Lucille, and Jacqueline; four grandchildren, gale, Valerie, Carlton, and Michael; 12 great grandchildren, Natasha, Joslin, Chelsea, Johnathan, Desmond, "Little Cee", Christina, Sheridan, Kirsey, Khydra, Christopher, and William; son-in-law, Robert Graves; grandson-in-law, Vascoe Cross; adopted daughter, Nina McNeal, adopted granddaughter, Alexis Adams, and a host of other relatives and friends.
