Evelyn McMichael Perry Long, 76, of Huntingtown, MD passed away on November 10, 2009 at her home. She was born on March 11, 1933 to the late Johnnie McMichael and the late Minnie Young McMichael in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
She graduated from Mather Academy High School in Aiken, South Carolina. Then received her Bachelor's Degree from Hampton Institute in Hampton, VA and continued her graduate studies at Bowie State College and the University of Maryland, receiving a Master's Equivalency.
While at Hampton, Evelyn met and married the late Donald E. Perry. Together they had five children. In 1981, she married the late Langford E. Long, a lifetime resident of Calvert County.
She taught in the Washington, DC public school system from 1958 until 1974 when ill health forced her to resign. She resumed her career in 1976 in the Calvert County public school system where she was honored in 1981 as Teacher of the Year and retired in 1993.
Evelyn's memberships included the Calvert Education Association, The Maryland State Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, NAACP, The American Legion Auxiliary, The National Political Congress of Black Women Incorporated, Concerned Black Women of Calvert County, Minority Health Coalition, Southern Maryland Health Coalition and Retired Teachers Association.
She loved cooking, shopping, traveling, gospel music, the Redskins and doing what doth sayeth the Lord. She especially loved collecting butterflies and people. The family was continuously growing from her love of people.
Her Christian journey began at an early age in the Baptist Church. She loved the Lord and was faithfully committed to serving God She was involved in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, community outreach, and mentoring programs. She was a former member of Ward's United Methodist Church where she served as the Church Financial Secretary and Treasurer of the United Methodist Women. She was currently a faithful member of Carroll Western United Methodist Church.
Evelyn leaves with loving memories, five children, Vivian Perry Cooper, Donald Perry, Jr., Iris Perry, Michelle Perry Lalondriz, and Sheila Raker (Dale); thirteen grandchildren, Bobby Cooper, II (Kaiytie), Shauna Cooper, Janette Perry, Natasha Perry, Tamirra Perry, Kamen Perry, Donald McClean, Mariah Oswald, Querida Jones (Joseph), Clarissa Fleet (Michael), Rosangel Lalondriz Perry, Collin Raker, and Brandon Raker; twelve great-grandchildren; three sisters, Janet McMichael, Inga McMichael, and Candace McMichael; four brothers, Johnnie "Juggie" McMichael, Donald McMichael, Karl "Candyman" McMichael, and Calvin McMichael; a stepmother Dorothy "Dot" McMichael; two "adopted sisters" Gwendolyn Ashley and Lolita "Leetsie" Ashley (Gary Reynolds); two very special and devoted friends, Joseph Henson and Georgia Jones; a goddaughter, Tammy Parran; and a host of other relatives, friends and loved ones.
