Obituary for EVELYN L. KING

Life’s journey for Mother King began on Thursday, December 6, 1934 in Southhampton County, VA. She was the sixth child of ten born to the late Elizabeth Darden Boone and Johnny Boone. Mother King was preceded in death by both her parents; husband – Jesse Lee King; two sons – Jesse Lee King, Jr. and Ronald Eugene King; one daughter – Gloria Jean King; and eight of her ten siblings.

Mother King attended Southhampton County schools in addition to working the land with her parents and siblings. As a child she took pride in helping her parents on the farm and she excelled at picking cotton. In her early teens she met and married the love of her life Jesse Lee King on April 15, 1952. Mother King and her husband Jesse left their rural life of Southhampton County in search of more opportunities for themselves and their young family. They relocated to Harlem, New York in 1955. They lived there until the unexpected passing of Jesse, Mother King was left to raise their remaining young children as a single mother and she relocated to the Bronx, NY. Over the years, none of her children wanted for anything, she was strong-willed and determined to make a way for her family.

Mother King attended nursing school and upon graduation joined the local 1199 State Employees International Union where she was a very active member. During her career she worked at various hospitals in New York City. She was last employed at the Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged. Upon her retirement, she volunteered with the New York State Foster Care System to provide short-term housing to children in need while the state worked to reunite them with their families or find permanent placement for them. This work brought her so much joy as she loved caring for others and helping those in need. She was always willing to provide a meal, clothing, and even a few dollars to those that find themselves without.

Mother King accepted Christ early in life. After her retirement she became very active in the church. She joined Refugee Temple in Harlem NY. While serving God at Refuge Temple she was an active member of the Prayer Warrior Team and a member of the Women’s Missionary Ministry. In her later years she relocated to Prince Frederick, MD where she joined Bethel Way of the Cross where she was an active member. Upon leaving Bethel she joined Consolation Evangelistic Ministries, Inc. under the leadership of Elder Charles Hall. After becoming a member of Consolation Evangelistic Ministries, Inc. she served as one of the Mothers of the Church and a Prayer Warrior. She was a faithful member until her passing.

Mother King lived her life with so much joy. Everywhere she went she made friends quickly, she never met a stranger. She loved her family above all. She opened her heart and home to so many over the years. She was a surrogate mother to countless people along her life’s journey. She was truly a blessing to those whose life she touched. Mother King loved to cook and entertain, at any given time she would have a house full of people singing, dancing, eating, and having the time of their lives. She was especially known for her fried fish and chicken, cabbage, sweet potato pies, and made from “scratch” cakes. When one left Mother King’s house they left with their bellies full, a smile on their face, a plate for later and a plate for a family member who could not attend. Oh, what a joyous time was had at Mother King’s house, it was always a party to remember. During her lifetime she made many lifetime friends, who will miss her greatly. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, cousin, friend, and grandmother.

Mother King leaves to cherish her loving memory six children Lynette Boone and Gary King both of the Bronx, NY, Lewis D. King, Sr. (Rose) of Upper Marlboro, MD, Darryl King of Staten Island, NY, Hassan King and Rashid King both of Prince Frederick, MD; twelve grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one sister Lillian Hoggard of Virginia Beach, VA; one sister-in-law Mary Boone of Queens, NY; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
