Obituary for ETHEL MAY IDA ROSIE LEE HALL-CONTEE
ETHEL MAY IDA ROSIE LEE HALL-CONTEE was born to the union of Enoch Henry Hall and Goldie Iva Brooks-Hall on January 15, 1945 in Lusby, Maryland. She was the eighth child born of eleven children.
Ethel was educated in the Calvert County and Prince George's County Public Schools. She worked as a veg- table picker and an oyster and clam shucker. Later, Ethel worked in the janitorial and domestic fields. She served the Eisenman family in Calvert County for more than twenty years and developed a close relationship with the three Eisenman children and spent countless hours with them.
Ethel gave her life to Christ at a young age and was a member of St. John United Methodist Church. Later, she joined Mount Hope United Methodist Church. In 1997, she rededicated her life to Christ, was baptized by Pastor John K. Jenkins, and joined the First Baptist Church of Gleneden. She loved her church and had her favorite seat. Ethel served the Lord faithfully and attended First Baptist until her health began to fail. When she was unable to attend church, she would watch the service on the internet. Ethel was determined that she would watch Pastor Jenkins every Sunday morning.
Ethel met the late John Garrett Cottee. John proposed to Ethel at her parent's house in Friendship, Maryland. On February 18, 1964, they were united in holy matrimony at the Union Methodist Church in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. On the day of the wedding; Ethel remembered vividly that she wore a long blue satin dress. From this union a beautiful girl, Denise Brenda Ann Cottee, was born.
She was blessed to later meet and fall in love with Joseph Melvin Hawkins Jr., who stole her heart, as she also stole his. They continued to be dedicated to one another for almost 30 years.
Ethel reared her three daughters in Dunkirk, Maryland (Calvert County). She enjoyed cooking (her favorite was cornbread pudding), planting flowers, but most of all spending quality time with her family. She loved playing softball with her sister Mildred "Bell" Savoy at Glendale ball field until she broke her thumb. Her most enjoyable moments were always during holidays at home with her family. It did not matter if the family connected in Maryland or Georgia, as long as she was at the home of one of her girls, she was happy to have her family together enjoying one another with love and laughter. Her favorite family games were Phase 10 and Uno and she was good at playing them. Sometimes she would get caught plucking more cards than she was suppose to. Her family would all exclaim "Mamma/Grandma, what are you doing?" Her response would be "what ... what you mean?" and they would all laugh so hard!
She was the heart of her family. She made sure all of her children were prepared for life, independent and self sufficient. Ethel did not go to bed until she spoke with each of her daughters and grandchildren. She made sure they all arrived home safely and was doing well. When she learned how to use Facetime on her iPhone, she would call while they were at school or work and would say, ''I'm calling to see if you're OK," followed with "what are you doing?"
She loved life and always had a smile on her face no matter how loud she spoke. Ethel never held grudges and was quick to forgive and show love. Whomever Ethel met, she made sure they enjoyed her conversation and laughter. Growing up, she had a loving friendship with her cousins, Maude Philips, Alora Porch, Betty Ann Jefferson, Diane Garner, Betty Garner, Lincoln Washington, Margaree Washington, and Doris Gross.
Ethel transitioned, while in the arms of her daughter, Dalerie, on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at 12:38 p.m. at her home in Springdale, Maryland. As she took a deep breath, one little tear trickled down her face from her left eye. Dalerie wiped her tear away and Ethel took her last breath as she said her final goodbye. She is now rejoicing in heaven with her parents, Enoch and Goldie Hall; two brothers, Maude "Duke" Hall and Thomas Hall; and four sisters, Mildred "Bell" Savoy, Mary Dawkins, Lelia Johnson, and Brenda "Dolleen" Hall.
She leaves a legacy of love to her three daughters, Valarie Marie Brown-Williams, Denise Brenda Ann Cottee and Dalarie Victoria Beard; her son-in-law Daren Beard; six grandchildren, Ramon Fraizer Jr., 'Keyonna Townsend, Arvisse Saunders, Tanazia Brackett, Anyssa Williams and Jared Beard; six greatgrandchildren, Ja 'Shon Smith, Nylayah Frazier, Ja'Ziah Ragan, Nalani Frazier, Zakari Sealey, and Zaylen Sealey; three sisters, Iva "Babysis" Savage, Myrtle Jeanette Ford and Pearl Lorraine Hall; one brother, Robert Hall; two very special and dear cousins, Goldie Mickey Harrod and Harold Smith; three godsons, Henry Giles, James Brooks, and Dominique Harrod; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and special friends.
Through the endurance of the winds of adversity, struggles of humanity and the storms of life, Ethel matured into a God-fearing wornan. She was a loving mother, an extraordinary grandmother, an. amazing great-grandmother and a genuine friend. She leaves her family with fond memories that will forever remain with them. She lived a full and happy life! To everyone who was related to her by love that called her Mamma, Grandma, or Auntie, she loved you very much. She always ended her conversations with "I love you more," and to everyone here today, Mamma loves you more.
