Ethel Beatrice Handy was born March 11, 1928 in Baltimore, MD to the late Raymond Herbert and Tekoah Claiborne of Halifax, VA. Ethel departed this life peacefully on November 16, 2021 at her daughter’s home in Chesapeake Beach, MD.
Ethel graduated from the Baltimore City public school system. Served as the secretary for the Inspector General at Ft. George G. Meade Army Base. After she retired, she began a second career as a bookkeeper.
She was married to Randolph Handy and out of their union they had two daughters, Janice and Brenda. She later met the love of her life, Joseph Barber, and they spent over 30 years blissfully happy.
Ethel was an avid traveler, bowler, cook, lover of life and a die-hard Baltimore Ravens fan. She also loved spending time with her family. Holidays, cookouts and anytime family gathered were special to her. She had a smile that could brighten up any room, style that out matched anyone, and loved beyond measure.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and sisters John, Sally, Lorraine, and Herman; her daughter Janice; son-in laws Howard Freeland and Howard Williams; and the love of her life Joseph Barber. She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter Brenda; eight grandchildren Howard, Damon (Buffy), Brandon, Desiree, Darrick (Tracy), Elliot, Thedra (Paul), and Ray (Whitney); eleven great grandchildren Desmond, Jerri (Dante), Zanae, Elliot Jr., Jaiden, Tristan, Aasya, Desiah, Braylen, Ray Jr., and Raeden; one great-great grandchild Donovan; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
