Obituary for ELLA MAE GROSS
Ella Mae Weems Gross was born April 21, 1919 in Lusby, Maryland to the late Rosie Johnson and the late Eugene Weems. She departed this life quietly on November 12, 2019 at Calvert Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Ella Mae was united in holy matrimony to the late Lawrence Calvin Gross on June 11, 1950. From this union one son was born, Larry Bernard Gross. Ella Mae and Larry never lived apart from one another. Larry lived with his mom and dad for the first 25 years of his life. Larry, along with his wife Gloria, lived next door to his mom and dad for another 25 years. The last 18 years of her life, Ella Mae lived with Larry a total of 68 years.
Ella Mae was a lifelong resident of Calvert County spending all of her adult life as a homemaker; devoted spouse, mother; grandmother and great grandmother. She was educated in Calvert County Public Schools. Although she did not complete high school, she was an avid reader and writer. Ella Mae was a lifelong member of St. John United Methodist Church, having join the church at the early age of 5. Ella Mae's hobbies included traveling, gardening, bible reading and shopping.
Ella Mae celebrated her 1OOth birthday in April of this year. Over 200 family and friends attended the celebration and reunion.
Ella Mae is survived by her devoted son Larry; grandson Bernard and his wife Melissa; two great-grandchildren: Jaelen and Lauren; sister and traveling companion Ruth Gantt Reynolds) nieces: Doris Reynolds Kallon, Helen Reynolds Durant, Deborah Reynolds Robinson, Carol Lee Gantt Shaifer and Joyce Gantt; nephews: Vernon Haley, Leon "Sonny” Reynolds, William "Billy” Reynolds, Samuel Reynolds, Douglas Reynold, Lester Bailey, Joseph Gantt, Darryl Gantt, Emmett Gantt; step-siblings: Margaret Gantt Chase, Edith Gantt Commodore, Marcellas Gantt Ingram, Vivian Gantt Sommerville, Theresa Gantt Miles; lifelong friends: Sarah Taylor; Sharlyn Briscoe, Zelma Brooks and Celeste Weems; Devoted care-giver Tracy Garner; and, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Ella Mae will undoubtedly be remembered as loving, caring, giving and nurturing to all who knew her. Rest in peace mother; grandmother, great-grandmother; sister; aunt, great aunt, and friend.
