Obituary for DRUSILLA JONES RUSSELL

On August 1, 1930 God gifted to the late Leon and Florence Jones one amazing little girl, Drusilla Virginia Jones. She was the oldest of four children, Margaret Hall, the late Stanley “Pick” Jones, and Florencetine Randall. She attended Randall Cliff Elementary School and Brooks High School in Calvert County, MD. While in grade school, Drusilla Jones met John Russell. John’s brother, Tink, would become Drusilla and John's personal mailman-delivering written letters between the two. Drusilla went on to marry John Russell on August 7, 1948. From this union, they had five children, John Jr., Carolyn, Gail, Leona, and Shenita. Their sixth child was Carolyn’s daughter Kim, who Drusilla referred to as, “the child I didn’t give birth to”. At an early age, Drusilla joined St. Edmonds United Methodist Church in Calvert County, MD. After marriage, Drusilla and John moved to Washington, DC where they would become members of Douglas United Methodist Church. After over 30 years of membership at Douglas, John and Drusilla decided to make their final church home at Campbell AME. During her membership at Douglas, Drusilla was very active. She taught Sunday school, participated in the Methodist Women’s Organization and was also a part of the Culinary Ministry. Drusilla was a strong virtuous woman and very protective of her husband and children. While a very warm hearted and caring person, Drusilla was also a feisty woman who said exactly what she wanted to say to whomever she wanted to say it! Drusilla’s children often referred to her as “Muhammad Ali’s sister”. Once our mother’s health started declining in 2007, we witnessed our parents fall deeper in love! Mom would fall asleep holding dad’s hand and laying on his shoulder. Mom also exhibited a strong will to win this fight. She showed us her true strength and reinforced her strong faith in God’s healing power. It was extremely inspirational to us to exhibit. We have so many wonderful memories that will inspire us to carry on her legacy. She will live on in our hearts forever. Drusilla's legacy will continue to flourish in the lives of her husband of 63 years, John Russell, Sr.; their children, John Russell, Jr. (Deborah), Carolyn Russell, Gail Russell McClain (Ricky), Leona Russell Floyd (Bruce), and Shenita Russell Wells (Tony); two sisters; Margaret Hall (Robert deceased) and Florencetine Randall (Thomas); two sisters-in-law, Doris Jones and Muriel Russell, one brother in-law Humphrey “Tink” Russell (Sally); eight grandchildren; Tammy, Kim, Troy, John III (Miriam), Ricky, Jr. (Erika), Caitlin, Richard, and Rachel; five great-grandchildren, Randolph, Timi, Jaylen, Anja, and Ricky III, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and relatives.
