Obituary for DOROTHY W. SMITH

Early in the morning on May 24, 2021, God dispatched an Angel of Mercy to receive unto Himself one of His servants, Dorothy Smith. Dorothy Willow “Willa” (Ford) Smith, was born December 8, 1925, in Dunkirk, MD, to the late George William and Mary Elsie “Booze” Ford. She was an only child; however, she had a very dear cousin, the late Lillian Adams whom she considered her sister.

Dorothy received her early education in Calvert County at Hall Creek School, a one-room schoolhouse located in Dunkirk, MD which is now the Coopers United Methodist Church cemetery. She graduated from William Sampson Brooks High School in Prince Frederick, MD. Dorothy worked at the Census Bureau in Suitland, MD, and also as a cook at Hunters in Wayson’s Corner, MD. On July 29, 1950, Dorothy was united in holy matrimony to James “Jook” Smith. They were blessed with ten children. After her marriage, she became a housewife assisting her husband on the family farm raising tobacco, corn, pigs and gardening. As the children became older, they assisted with the farming which allowed her more time to spend in the house. She and her husband worked very hard to ensure that they provided land for each child to build a home on the family farms.

Dorothy was a very soft spoken and kind hearted person. She really enjoyed watching her favorite TV shows. They were the ID Channel, Dr. Phil, CNN, and Live PD (especially the Calvert County episodes) until it was taken off the air. She enjoyed her family, playing Chinese checkers (no one could beat her), visiting the casinos and traveling. She truly enjoyed her vacation to Disney World with her sister and the Bahamas with family. She had a love of gardening, canning and cooking. She was known for her many special dishes, such as her crab cakes, homemade rolls, sweet potato pies, macaroni & cheese (with tomatoes) and homemade root beer, just to name a few. Dorothy was an entrepreneur at a very young age. She sold candy at school and vegetable seeds door to door in the neighborhood in order to purchase her first typewriter.

Dorothy was a member of Coopers United Methodist Church where she previously served as a Sunday school teacher, member of the Women’s Society, worked in the kitchen and assisted with spring cleaning. Even though she no longer attended church, she always supported the church financially as well as preparing dishes for special programs. On many occasions, she would provide dishes for the Outreach Ministry (Project Echo). Prior to her brief illness and hospital stay in May, despite her age, she was still able to maintain an active life at her age. She continuously cared for herself, cooked, washed and ironed her clothes, etc. She was determined to care for herself as long as she could, only requiring assistance from her children when she could no longer do for herself. She also continued to delegate as she’d say that somebody has to be the “boss”. She was looking forward to seeing how her garden was progressing this season.

She was such a selfless person that if you asked her if she could do something for you, even though she may have had something already planned, she would try to figure out a way to accomplish both tasks.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, James “Jook” Smith, sons Marvin Jerome Smith, Sr.; Carroll “Lester” Smith, Stewart Leon Smith, Sr.; grandson Lester Eric “Lamont” Smith and great grandson, James Russell Smith, III (Jay). Dorothy leaves to mourn her loving children, James Sr., (Russell), Steve Sr., Kathy, Horace Sr., Jeffrey, Kim and Kay, twenty-one grandchildren, Marvin Jr., (Lisa), Kimberly, Nolan (Pauline), Jacqueline (Reyniak), Merrill, Michelle (Daniel), Yolanda, James Jr., (Little Russell) (Yhonnie), Teon (Kellie), Eric Sr., Grafton, Tears (William Sr.), Lesley, Steve Jr., (Angie), Corey, Troy (Victoria), Joy (Tony), Stewart Jr., LaNiece, LaToya (Darryl) and Horace Jr., thirty-four great-grandchildren, Martin, Marlon, Erika, Briana, Diamond, Nolan Jr., Jasmine, Riley, Danielle, Kenyon, Yazmine, Darrien, Aubree, Brielle, Eric Jr., Kelsey, William, Aaliyah, Kyle, Amaya, Steve III (Trey), Ivy, Hayden, Violet, Olivia, Antwuan, Paris, Patriece, Tiriana, Kingston, Londyn, Alaya, Taleeya and Willow; and two great-great grandchildren, Matthew and Nova; three daughters-in-law, Phyllis, Francina and Charlayne; one brother-in-law, Edward Garrett, three sisters-in-law, Matilda “Tillie” Fletcher, Delores Smith and Gertrude “Isabella” Estep; special cousins, Stanley Robinson and Calvert “Bo” Satterwhite; play brother, Gilbert Chaney; special nephew, Royce Smith; special niece, Tina Brown; play daughter, Carolyn Hall; bonus son, John Cole; special neighbor/family, Mr. and Mrs. James Easton and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
