When Dorothy faced her sunset on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, she proceeded to meet her daughter: Shirley Brooks, her parents: Jesse and Lydia Reid, her sisters: Alice Brown, Mable Hebron, Bessie Reid, Helen Reid, Maude Hart, Virginia Hayes, and her brothers: Russell Reid, Ridgely Reid and Calvin Reid in that land where pain and sorrow are no more.

Born, Dorothy Viola Reid on September 22, 1927 to the late Jesse and Lydia Reid in Huntingtown, Maryland, she became a dynamic member of a caring and generous family.

Dorothy attended Plum Point School and W. Simpson Brooks High School. She loved writing and reciting poetry.

Dorothy gave away her love to James Edward Claggett, who married her among family and friends, on April 16, 1949 in Huntingtown, Maryland. They remained married for 67 years,
nine months, two weeks and one day. James and Dorothy were truly like two peas in a pod.

Dorothy became a talented restaurant worker and skilled cook first in Washington, DC and later in Huntingtown, Maryland. After moving to Huntingtown she was employed at Carey's Restaurant in Chesapeake Beach and Surrey Inn, in Huntingtown.

At her home church, St. Edmonds United Methodist Church, Dorothy worked diligently in many of the ministries including: the Flower, t11e Board of Trustees, the Kitchen Ministry and she was a member of the St. Edmonds Senior Choir. Dorothy was dedicated to her church. She often went above and beyond the call of duty in attendance and support for as long as she remained able.

Loving and cherishing her precious memory are: her husband, James; children: James, Jr., Clifton (Cinderella) Claggett, Regina Claggett, Melvin (Veronica) Claggett, Eugene Claggett, Mabelee Gray, and Dolise (Nathan) Mackall; sister, Florence Thompson; sisters-in-law: Freda Reid, Mabel Morris King, and Alice Austin; grandchildren: Sidney, Jr., Shawn, Sr., Shay, Shelly, Sequan, Shanna, Angelina, Danita, Antoine, Demaris, Melvin, Jr., Corey, Kevin, Shanae, Eugenia, Shameeka, Yolanda, London, and Colby.
