Obituary for DELONTA D. HARROD

On Thursday, April 15, 2021, GOD requested our beloved son, fiancée,
father, brother and friend, Delonta DaBrien Harrod, to his
eternal rest at his home in North Beach, Maryland.
Delonta, also known as Jake and Yung Jake of Calvert County, Maryland,
was born on September 6, 1991, to Glenda Harrod and Anthony Howard.
He enjoyed joking around with his family and friends, bringing great joy
and laughter, and spending quality time with his siblings and cousins:
Dominique Harrod, D’Mario Thomas, and Xeria Harrod-Thomas. This
group had an inseparable bond. Even today, they still hold a tight-knit
bond as adults. Delonta graduated from Huntingtown High School in 2009.
While in high school, he focused on his schoolwork and participated in
school activities.
Delonta was baptized at the Bethel Way of the Cross Church of Christ at
the age of 9 years old. He and his buddy D’Mario went down in JESUS’
name on the same day.
Delonta loved his parents. He and Glenda would speak multiple times a
day. Glenda would call Delonta to ensure that he was awake, he had taken
his medication, and made sure her grandson was ready for school. There
were many days when Glenda would ask, “Who is taking care of Cam
today?” Delonta would say, “You are!” She would do just that.
He also had a special love for his father Anthony and stepmother Maxine.
Whenever Delonta would visit their home and food was on the stove, he
would want it right from the skillet. During one Christmas Holiday, Delonta
drove them crazy when he wanted a pair of Timberland Boots, texting his
shoe size every day to remind them.
His late great-grandfather, George Broome Harrod, gave Delonta the
nickname Jake. He saw something special in Jake, nicknaming him after his
great-great-great-grandfather, Jake Broome. Jake would accompany his
great-grandfather Broome into the tobacco fields and barns where they
were stripping tobacco. Not knowing what he was getting into, Jake
followed. Jake later went on to work as a cook in many restaurants,
including JT’s Kitchen in Sunderland, and most recently, Traders in
Chesapeake Beach. This young man was not afraid to work to support his
family. He was also employed at Royalle Dining Services Inc., and GP
Luckett Construction. Everyone loved this hard worker and his meek and
humble personality. Many have shared that Delonta was just a great guy,
and there are not many like him. You never had to ask Delonta for help. If
he saw you were struggling, or even thought that you needed assistance, he would immediately be at your side. Delonta brought joy to many, as
he was a protector, mentor, and a teacher to his younger cousins.
In 2011, Delonta met the love of his life, Jenae Jones. These two were
inseparable. They enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and
friends. They especially enjoyed their trips to Bermuda, New Jersey, and
many other destinations. Jenae and Jake were engaged to be married
on August 13, 2021. They had a spectacular wedding planned in
Baltimore, Maryland. We were all looking forward to those nuptials;
however, GOD had a different plan.
In 2016, Delonta and Jenae were blessed by GOD with a precious son,
Camden (Cam) Harrod. Cam is something else! Cam and his daddy were
best friends. They completed each other. Cam is always saying, “Where
is my daddy?” “I want my daddy!” He often whispers, “Shhhh, you have
to be quiet. My daddy is sleeping.” Delonta loved Cam with his entire
heart, and Cam loved him just the same.
On April 15, 2021, Jake was summoned home. We must trust GOD’s plan
to fully understand why, while acknowledging that GOD does not make
mistakes.
Delonta was preceded in death by his grandfathers: Lewis Howard and
Almous Harrod Sr., and his grandmother Leatha Mae Harrod.
Delonta leaves to cherish his memories and be blessed by his love and
devotion: his grandmother Thelma Howard; father Anthony Howard and
stepmother Maxine; mother Glenda Harrod; fiancée Jenae Jones; son
Camden Harrod; two brothers Bertram (BB) Bell (Kate); Jamar Harrod;
two sisters LaTisha Fleet (Kirk) and Rochelle Howard (Mat).
He also leaves to cherish a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, family
members, and friends.
Special thanks to Harry & Goldie Harrod, Stanley & Marcella Jones,
Danita Claggett, and Carolyn Harcum, all who acted as second parents
and grandparents to Jake.
