Obituary for CHARLES R. GARRETT
Charles Ruben Garrett was born on March 22, 1931 in Lothian, Maryland to the late Joseph and Pauline Garrett. He attended Anne Arundel County Public Schools. He served honorably in the U. S. Military at which time he met and later married Florine Wills. From this union they were blessed with the birth of four children.
Charlie, as he was affectionately known, worked for Chaney Enterprise for more than 40 years. He was dedicated and truly enjoyed working for them. This was made clear to everyone that came in contact with him, because he took it very seriously. He operated several pieces of heavy equipment for the company, but was most known for driving the cement truck. He made many friends while working with this company and remained in contact with them through the years.
He loved sports, especially baseball, his beloved Baltimore Orioles, when they were winning. If they were on a losing streak, his favorite team became the Washington Nationals. We all know that his favorite football team was the Chicago Bears. He enjoyed watching the Redskins lose to the Bears, Dallas Cowboys beat the Bears and the Raiders just holding on. (By now you all should know which one of his children put this statement in – Vanessa).
As a child, Charlie attended Adams Chapel (Adams United Methodist Church) with his parents. This was not an option; it was a requirement. Later he joined the Church of God in Lothian under the leadership of Elder Raymond C. Wills where he was a member of the choir and other singing groups. To continue his spiritual growth, he later attended the Righteous Church of God, Washington DC under the leadership of the late Elder William R. Vicks, Sr. He continued his work with the Church under the leadership of Pastor Nathan Butler, Sr. He enjoyed working in the church both physically and spiritually. He was a member of the Usher Board, Pastor’s Aide, Missionary, Trustee Board and was an ordained Deacon in which he served faithfully. As he began to age, he would worship at numerous churches locally, Bethel Way of the Cross, Lothian Church of God, First Christian Community Church and his beloved Adams United Methodist Church just to name a few.
Charlie loved people. He was always willing to lend a helping hand where ever he saw a need. As a missionary, he and his wife would visit the sick and shut in offering prayer and fellowship with each of them. They never mind traveling around just to spend time with those in need. The beauty of growing in Christ for Charlie and Florine, was their willingness to hear and to be led by the spirit of God. Florine supported and stood by his side through their life together. God used them to be witnesses for him and to spread the love of God to others. His willingness to help others was unconditional. It didn’t matter if it was cleaning up at the church, cutting grass, helping to take care of someone, or just giving that wonderful smile and hugs. He was always there for others as well as his family. But most of all, he loved God. He was sure of his faith and never wavered from his belief. He trusted God with his life and knew that God would take care of him to the end. He was a solder in the Army of the Lord until he was called home.
He leaves to celebrate his life, his devoted and loving wife Florine, one daughter, Vanessa Garrett-Ingram, two sons, Rick and Carlos (Tony) Garrett, two daughters-in-law, Rachelle Garrett and Lavinia (Vinnie) Garrett, two brothers Edward and Melvin Garrett, two sisters-in-law, Mary Sollers and Doretha Smith, one brother-in-law, Stanley Smith, five Grandchildren and five Great Grandchildren and an extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and church family. He is preceded in death by his son, Nocka Tramel Garrett and his son in law, William (Bill) Ingram.
