Obituary for CHARLES EDWARD GRAY

Charles Edward Gray, the son of the late Cornelius and Helen I. Gray, was born in Lower Marlboro, MD on March 21, 1936. He departed this life on February 17, 2021 in Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC.

Charles received his education from Calvert County Public Schools. He was a graduate of Brooks High School. After graduation, he then joined the U.S. Air Force, serving 20 years and achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant.

In 1960 he was joined in Holy Matrimony to Catherine Wormley, the love of his life for over 60 years. They were married at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, VA.

Charles led a full life, traveling to many states and countries throughout the world. He survived three tours of duty in Vietnam as well as several other overseas tours. He retired from the Air Force with Honors and returned to his home in Maryland where he resided with Catherine in Lower Marlboro, MD.

He was employed at Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) for 10 years as a Meter Reader. He worked an additional 5 years at Sneade's Hardware in Owings, MD before enjoying his full retirement.

He was a member of the Gray Ray Post #220 in Prince Frederick, MD where he enjoyed the comradery of several other veterans in Calvert County. He was a member of Mt. Hope United Methodist Church.

Charles enjoyed watching westerns and football. He was a passionate fan of the Washington Redskins now known as the Washington Football Team. He had an entertaining sense of humor and loved telling jokes. He enjoyed family gatherings, most memorably the annual Family Christmas Breakfast where he always wore his favorite floral red and black shirt. That shirt made its annual appearance for over 30 years. It was indeed a true family tradition.
He leaves to cherish his fond and loving memories, his wife Catherine; three sisters, Ilean Cook, Olivia Simpson and Dorothy Ann Gray; two brothers, Barry Gray (Jenni) and Carroll Gray (Jean); two sisters-in-law, Ernestine Yancey and Carolyn Gray; and an abundance of nieces, nephews, family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Hawkins; brothers, Therman Gray and Alvin Gray and sister-in-law, Geraldine Gray.
