Obituary for CAROLYN R. CHEW
On the morning of Sunday, March 25, 2018, Carolyn Rebecca Chase Chew received her Golden wings. Carolyn was born to the late Susie Mackall and the late Walter Franklin Chase. She had a twin brother that did not survive.
Carolyn was educated in Calvert County public school. Like many children during those times, she left school to work on the family farm.
As a young girl, Carolyn married the late Merton Chew. There were no children from this union. She was a devoted wife and homemaker and helped to raise six of her husband's children.
Carolyn had a strong work ethic. She held many jobs in the county. She would work in the tobacco field all day, come home and fix meals for the family never complaining about the heat of the day.
Many of the ladies in the county called on Carolyn for domestic help in their homes. She was known to do a good job. For years Carolyn worked at Warren Denton Oyster House shucking clams and oysters. She would say it was a good job, because you were your own boss because you could choose your hours to work.
Carolyn was employed with the Board of Education of Calvert County. She received several certificates for perfect attendances and exceptional service. She retired June 5, 1995.
Carolyn was a faithful member of Patuxent United Methodist Church until her health began to fail. Carolyn was a member of The Senior Choir and The Rainbow Gospel Singers. One of her favorite song was, "The Last Mile of the Way''. In addition, Carolyn was an usher for many years at the church. She truly touched the lives of her church family.
Many members still talk about her dedication when someone was sick, in the hospital, or death in the family. Carolyn had a strong will and was very out spoken. Her favorite saying was, "Get a Life".
Carolyn's loved ones who preceded her in death were: her husband, Merton Chew, sisters, Thelma Hicks, Genieva Coates, Zora Thomas, who was raised as a big sister, nephews, William (Billy) Jacks and Paul Elliot Hicks, Step kids, Howard Franklin Chew and Jerome Leonard Chew.
