Obituary for CAROL C. LEE

Carol Rae Carruthers was born on February 12, 1932 in Dallas, Texas. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Jacob Hudson Carruthers and Marguerite Ruth Taylor. She spent her formative years in Fort Worth, Texas.

Carol Carruthers graduated from Phyllis Wheatly High School in Houston, Texas . She was the valedictorian of her class. Carol Carruthers received a scholarship to Talledega College in Talledega, Alabama, where she received her B.A. in Elementary Education. It was at Talledega that she became a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. (AKA) and remained an active member through her whole life. During her senior year in college she married Lt. Charles H. Lee who was serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. They were married November 29, 1952. To this union was born Charles Henry Lee, Jr., Margaret Carol Lee, and William Jacob Lee. Carol and Charles were married just short of 55 years.

Carol Lee began her teaching career in 1954 as an elementary school teacher in Milledgeville Georgia and would continue teaching in the Houston Unified School District in Houston Texas, where she remained for seven years. During her time in Houston she attended Texas Southern University (TSU) where she received her M.A in Early Childhood Development. She returned to Georgia in 1963 where she taught in the Atlanta Schools for two years while her husband studied to obtain his Master of Divinity from the Interdenominational Seminary-Gammon Theological Seminary. During her tenure in Atlanta Carol Lee was selected as a demonstration teacher for several projects for both the Texas and Georgia State Department of Education.

In 1965 the Lee family moved to San Francisco, California where she became employed by the San Francisco Unified School District for 21 years, where she made significant contributions to the school system as both a teacher and administrator.

For seven years she was Site Manager of Dr. Charles R. Drew Children 's Center, which had the largest number of participant families in the District; taught courses in Early Childhood Education at the City College of San Francisco; developed the first Preschool Parent Education Program at John Adams Adult School in San Francisco; wrote several proposals which were funded for the San Francisco United School District teacher in service programs; was the Site Manager for the Child Development Program; resource Teacher for Title VI ; coordinator for both the elementary school and ESSA counselors; head teacher in Elementary Guidance Service; and Parent Educator for several children's centers.

Carol Lee was an active Christian woman. She taught Bible school where she received several awards for her leadership and teaching . Carol Lee served as the Sunday School Superintendent at Downs Memorial United Methodist church where her husband was serving as pastor. She was the
visionary of Down's annual Christmas program where the Christmas story was brought to life in both Word and Song. Carol Lee also became a Lay Speaker for the California/Nevada conference for the United Methodist Church.

She leaves behind to celebrate her life three children: Charles H. Lee, Jr. (Rose); Dr. Margaret C. Lee; Rev. William Lee; two brothers Lt. Col. (retired) Riley Carruthers (Casandra); and Judge Andrew Carruthers (Willie); six grandchildren: Melanie, Charles Ill, Monique, Wayne, Edward,
and William: one great grandson Mason; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
