Obituary for BURNETT 'LEE' NETTLES
On March 16th, 2011, Burnett Lee Nettles, affectionately known as Lee, passed away peacefully at home in Laurel, Maryland. The eldest son of the late Fred and Gladys Nettles, he was born on March 19, 1952 in McKnight, SC.
Lee attended college in NY , just prior to being drafted into the U.S. Army. Lee served in the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam where he was a senior Morse Incept Operator and was awarded Vietnam service medals. Lee worked as a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) agent in Denver, Colorado and Vienna, Austria duties included Federal Air Marshall (FAM) and Civil Aviation Specialist. Lee excelled as Special Agent in Charge of the BWI Civil Aviation Security Field Unit and helped lead BWI through federalization in 2002. In addition, Lee superbly led the TSA Regulatory Compliance group serving as the Assistant Federal Security Director for Inspections-(AFSD-I) since day one May 5, 2002.
Lee was an active member in the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) on the both the local and national level. Serving as the Parlimentarian of the Washington DC Chapter. Lee was also active in the National Organization of Black Women in Law Enforcement (NOBWLE) in both the Maryland Chapter and National, Serving as the NOBWLE National Parlimentarian. Lee was an avid movie collector , loved photography, and jet-skiing. He was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. Lee had a passion for music and gadgets and was anxiously awaiting his new I-phone.
He enjoyed giving and bringing happiness to others and neither expected nor wanted anything in return. Lee was passionate about the education of today's youth and their success. He was known for being a sharp dresser and was affectionately referred to as "Mr. Silk" by the TSA staff. Lee loved good desserts especially from the Cheesecake Factory and his sister Anita's specialities brownies and sweet potato pie.
Lee leaves to cherish his memory: one sister Anita (Johnny) Smith of Hinesville, GA; two brothers Fred, Jr. (Catherine) Nettles of Hinesville, GA and Perry R. Nettles of Laurel, MD; four uncles and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
