Obituary for BETTY J. REYNOLDS
Betty Jane Reynolds affectionately known as half pint, Shorty, Ms. Betty, Sis, Barbara Bush, Paddington Bear (especially when she wore her hats) and Betty Bop was born to the late James and Irene Wallace on May 22,1947 in Prince Frederick, MD. She was the 5th child of 8 children.
Betty received her education at Calvert County Public School System. Graduating from Brooks Sampson High School in 1966. She was proud that her class was the last to graduate from there. Betty took various classes from the Board of Education to gain a better understanding of jobs and to be more efficient.
Betty started as a Title 1 Assistant in 1974 at Calvert Elementary School. In 1984 as a Special Education Assistant at Calvert Country School until her retirement on June 30, 2012. She Later started a part-time position with the ARC of Southern Maryland working with individuals with disabilities. In August 201 7, she became a substitute teacher.
Betty joined Patuxent UMC at a very early age. The love of God led her to be active in many organizations and committees such as: President of MYF (youth group), Secretary of Trustees, Member of Voices of Praise and Senior Choirs (she had a great alto voice), Scholarship Committee, United Methodist Women Usher Board, Certified Lay Servant, Lay Leader to Annual Conference, Founder of the Senior Trailblazers (a committee that honors all who are over 70 years old) and was responsible for ordering many of the materials needed for the church. Betty was always faithfully attending bible study, visiting the sick and shut-in at their homes, in the hospital and nursing homes. Sending cards and thinking of you notes with love and words of encouragement. She especially loved sending in requests to Patrick Ellis (96.3 WHUR Radio Station) in recognition of family: friends and church members for all special occasions or just a special shout out. Even with all her commitments she still found the time to volunteer at Hospice Organization, the Gift Shop at the hospital, The Arc of Southern Maryland, Senior Pines, Project Echo, Board of Elections and Private Home Care for Special Needs individuals. For someone who at one time was a little nervous about driving, she drove that little blue car where ever God called her to serve.
Betty's favorite past time (when she was home) was reading the bible as well as other Christian books, looking at her favorite TV shows: Perry Mason Hazel Matlock, Lassie, Judge Judy, The Lone Ranger, Father Knows Best, The Young and The Restless, The Bold and The Beautiful, Family Feud and The Have and Have Nots. She truly enjoyed going out to the movies, shopping and dinner with the "girls". Sometimes just to kick up her legs, she would go line dancing.
Yes, she did have some time to make her famous coleslaw and jello eggs for Easter. The biggest surprise for the family was when she baked apple pie and Sock it to me cake from scratch. Wow she was smiling from ear to ear when she got a "thumbs up" from all of us.
Betty loved her family, friends and church. I can truly say all our lives have been impacted by her m one way or another and many have become better people by her selfless acts of kindness and love never expecting a whole lot back because she knew her blessings would come.
Betty's favorite scriptures were: Philippians 4:13, I Can Do All Things Through Christ Which Strengthens Me and Ecclesiastes 3:1-12, (A Time For Everything). Her favorite hymns were: The Old Rugged Cross, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, Just as I Am, Just a Closer Walk with Thee, Sending Up My Timbers, I'm Nothing Without You and I'm So Glad Jesus Lifted Me.
Betty peacefully went home to be with the Lord, her son, Ravelle Johnson; her parents, James and Irene Wallace; Brother, Alvin Wallace: Brother-in-law, Paul Norman and many other love ones on Friday, 10/18/18 after a short battle with cancer. God's plan was truly different from what we expected and prayed for.
When asked how she would want to be remembered, her response was, "I may not have always agreed with everything and everybody, but I had a willing heart and spirit and had a passion for seniors and individuals with disabilities." Betty also wants us to know that this was very hard (yes, most of this obituary was written by her) but you know that I like to be organized. God Bless and May My Love Always Remain in You.
Betty leaves precious memories and love to her Grandson: Deinez A. Johnson (DJ); Daughter-in-law: Tonya Johnson; five Sisters: Brenda Irene Wallace, Darlene Norman, Margaret Wallace and Rosalee Wallace; Adopted Sister: Evangelist Dottie (Stanley) Stewart; two brothers: Kenneth Wallace (Josephine) and Wayne Wallace (Twanda); Sister-in-Law: Lucy Wallace (Alvin deceased); two Aunts: Willie Mae Cooke (Irvin) and Dorisa Jones (James); one Uncle: Joe Brown (Glenda) and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins and two Special Cousins: Elsie Mae Jones and Joan Mackall.
