Obituary for BENJAMIN RUSSELL WHITE

"And it came to pass, . . . that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin." (Genesis 35:18)
Benjamin Russell White was born on October 12, 1923 and is the seventh of nine children born to the late Joseph and Irene White. He typified not only the definition of his given name-son of the right hand-but his birth order as well. The right hand signifies honour, power and efficiency-traits of which he has been the epitome throughout his life. The number seven is God's perfect number and in like manner, Ben has shown his love and commitment to his late wife, Irene, his family and friends to be perfect.
Educated in the Calvert County Public School system, from his youth, Ben was a hard worker. Throughout the years he has held diverse occupations. He worked as a butcher in the meat departments of the Calvert Locker Plant, Calvert Meats, IGA, A&P and SuperFresh (Prince Frederick and Waldorf locations). He raised tobacco to supplement his income, working primarily in the evenings after completing his workday. In later years, he held positions with BG&E and also worked construction in Dulles, Virginia. Some of these positions paid less than 50 cents a day yet he managed to save enough to purchase the property on which the home he built still sits.
"Mis' Ben," as he was known within the immediate community, was always been a faithful member of Carroll-Western United Methodist Church. Only in recent years did he resign his position as Trustee within the church after many years of service. He also served as sexton of the church in the past. Ben was also a long-time member of the Masons including having been a past Grand Master. Another pastime was barbecuing. Once he retired, he was frequently called upon to supply the best barbecue to be had. In everything he did, his sense of pride and pursuit of excellence was prevalent. He always stressed to his family the importance of personal integrity and pride-no matter how great or small the task or situation. Ben was loved, well known and respected by his family, his church and the community at large for the quiet, gentle spirit he was. He was patient and kind and always willing to be of assistance to family and friends in whatever capacity he was able. Truly the world was made a better place by this son of the right hand.
Benjamin Russell White leaves to cherish the memory of his love, his laughter and that dimple-framed smile 10 children: George (Margaret), Barbara Boyd, Patricia, Elsie Wilson (Carl), Bessie Willett (Milton), Rose Sollers (John), Russell (Kimberly), Arlene Forbes (Aubrey), Marilyn Jones (Jesse) and Matthew (Linda); 39 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. This is The Tribe of Benjamin! He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene; his daughter, Irene Anita Mason; his brothers, Wilson, Charles, Monroe, Oliver, Cedrick White; one sister, Gladys Henson; and his special friend, William Boyd. He is survived by his sisters Oreese White and Marie Smith; sisters-in-law: Mary Hawkins, Frances Hutchins, Rachel Smith, Margaret Mason (John) and Florence Marshall.
