Arvita Elizabeth Chew of Harwood, MD died on Sunday, August 24, 2008 at Hadley Memorial Hospital, Washington, D.C. She was born on Friday, August 9, 1940 in Friendship, MD. She was the seventh of eleven children born to the late Harvey Chew and the late Georgetta Creek Chew. She graduated from Wiley H. Bates High School in the Class of 1958.Arvita was blessed with two children, Donell and Corey.Arvita attended Carter's United Methodist Church in Friendship, MD until her health prevented her from doing so. She was a faithful and committed member of Carter's Usher Board and the Interdenominational Church Usher Associations of Anne Arundel County and Maryland for many years. She served on the Staff Pastor Parish Relations Committee, and a member of "Carter's Kitchen Crew". Arvita also served as Chairperson of Carter's Annual Women's Day and her most favorite program, "Creek and Chews Family & Friends Day. She said, "we have to start early for next year, we have to start early. She also loved going to the Lenten Services and Church Anniversary. We automatically knew we had one Usher. Arvita would usher every night except on the Opening Service & Homecoming services, in the kitchen she was. For the last year, whoever assisted her would be "in training".Arvita loved gardening, yard sales (going and sponsoring them), family gatherings, family trips, and ball games. "The Drury Giants" could do no wrong.Arvita retired from Crownsville State Hospital Center in Crownsville, MD after many years. She was a medical technician. She also worked in the homes of several families in the Annapolis area where she was loved as family.Arvita was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Chew and Margaret Savoy; her brother, Melvin Watkins, and one brother-in-law, Anthony Maynard.Arvita leaves to cherish her memories, her two sons, Harvey Donell Chew of Laurel, MD, and Corey Jones of Texas; four grandchildren, Samantha Chew, Kylen Burney, Austin Jones and Tyson Jones; four sisters, Mary Maynard, Shirley Spriggs, Rev. Hattie McDuffie, and Frances Brown; three brothers, Lawrence, Roland and Charles Chew; three brothers-in-law, Lawrence Spriggs, Ernest McDuffie, Oliver Brown; two sisters-in-law, Rita and Daisy Chew; two aunts, Esther Creek and Edith Chew; two God-children, Lakia Parker and Nikki Rawlings; Barbara Dorsey and Renee Anderson whom she loved as daughter-in-laws; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, church family, and friends.Funeral service was held on Friday, August 29, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at Friendship UM Church, Friendship, MD with Rev. Mildred D.W. Holliday, officiating.The interment was at Carter's UM Church Cemetery.The pallbearers were McDaniel Rawlings, Larry Spriggs, Sr., Allen Chew, Stephon Rawlings, Jerry Parker, and Sheerod Wilkerson.
