Obituary for ARTHUR ELI RICE

Rice, Arthur Eli (Age 90) On Wednesday, August 17, 2011, Arthur Eli Rice passed away in his Washington, D.C. home. He was the husband of Lillian Brown Rice; brother of Elmore Mackall and the lateTheodore (Maggie) and Pearl Rice; father of Lisa Darlene Teresa (Tom Thompson), and the late Arthur Erroll and Cheryl Michelle; godfather of Celeste Harris; grandfather of Paul Carmichael, Portia Ramona, Regina Maggio and Thomas Lynch; and great-grandfather of Trevor Arter and Dylan Paul. He is survived by brothers- and sisters-in law Lewis and Margie Brown; Rodger and Jourdania Brown; Helen Brewer; M. Naomi Brown; and Robert Johnson. He leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends. Mr. Rice was born, raised and attended public schools in Calvert County, Maryland. He later served his country in the United States Army in the Pacific Rim during WWII. Mr. Rice earned the Good Conduct Medal; the Army Occupation Medal – Okinawa; the World War II Victory Ribbon; and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon; he was honorably discharged in 1946. He continued his public service for over 30 years with the Defense Printing Service. He met his wife, Lillian, in 1954 at the Pentagon, where he worked until he retired. They married in 1959. After retirement, he expanded his cooking skills by learning how to bake bread and decorate his own homemade cakes. He was well-known for making homemade turkey sausage and the best apple pies ever! His other hobbies included fitness walking, caring for his lawn, and car repair. Once his wife retired, they expanded their travel adventures to include annual trips to St. Thomas, the Bahamas, a cross-country driving tour, several trips to Hawaii and a visit to Brazil. He was a dedicated beach bum. Mr. Rice will be remembered as a faithful husband, passionate father, hard worker, skillful carpenter, creative tinkerer, good neighbor, great friend, animated bid whist player, and rabid Redskins fan.
