Obituary for ALVIN WILLIAM FREELAND, SR.
Alvin William Freeland, Sr. was born on March 21, 1930 to the late Oliver and Lillian Plater Freeland in Parran, MD "better known today as Huntingtown, MD." He was the fifth born into a family of seven children. He departed this life on Tuesday, December 19, 2017. He was the last sibling to depart to this Life. Alvin was also known by many as "Mud" because he loved to play in the mud as a child. Alvin was educated in the Calvert County Public school system.
In November 1954, he was joined in holy matrimony to Julia Gertrude Riggs and remained married until her passing on June 1, 2014, just shy of their 60th Wedding Anniversary. They were the proud parents of three children. He was a great provider and a true family man.
Alvin served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a hard working entrepreneur and a man of many talents. Later in life, he attended Armstrong and Chamberlain trade school in Washington, DC, and became a certified radio, television, and electronics technician. He worked in the government for 4 years as a Chemist Technician. He continued his education and earned a certification to become a certified motorcycle and automobile mechanic.
Alvin worked his farmland for 20 years cropping tobacco and raising a garden for his family. His melons and vegetables were delicious. He even had a blackberry bush, strawberry patch, grapevines, and apple, pear, peach, and cherry trees! He often would say, "I raised them myself!"
As a leader with new endeavors, Alvin became a School Bus Contractor for 40+ years, and a School Bus Driver for 56 years. Most recently, he was the driver of bus #73. Last but not least, bulldozing was part of his occupation and he was a barber until the time of his death.
He loved his Harley Davidson motorcycle and he had the opportunity to ride with other bikers to Ocean City, MD. He also enjoyed playing the organ, piano, keyboard, and guitar. Some of his recreational activities included playing cards (spades) and telling jokes with his siblings. He was also a life-time member of the American Legion Post 220.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Lillian Plater-Freeland and his wife of 59 years, Julia Freeland. Six siblings, Bernice Brooks, John Freeland, Alice Phelps, Russell Freeland, Myrtle Williams, Donald Freeland; and daughter Paulette Freeland-Tinsley. He leaves to cherish his memories, his sons, Clark Sollers (Audrey), Alvin "Bunny" Freeland, Jr.; his daughters Sandra Tyler (Harold), and Saunders "Sandy Mandy" Freeland; nine grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Lowell Riggs (Regina) and Charles Riggs (Yvonne); one sister-in-law, Thelma Freeland. Alvin also held a special place in his heart for Larry Freeland, Theodore Holland and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. He will be dearly missed by his children, grandchildren, family, friends, and colleagues throughout Calvert County.
