Obituary for ALVERTA C. TOLER

Alverta C. Toler, 86, of Capitol Heights, MD passed away on November 10, 2010 at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington, Rockville, MD.
Alverta Toler was born in Dares, Maryland on April 19, 1924. She attended public school in Prince Frederick, Maryland until the age of 12. In June of 1936, her family moved to Baltimore, Maryland. She was enrolled in the school system there for three years. Alverta was a very good student. During the summer of 1939, her family moved to Hyattsville, Maryland. Immediately, she started babysitting for several military families in the area. The thrill of partially supporting herself was an interesting adventure for her. She began working several part-time jobs. Finally, she was hired as a full time housekeeper for the president of the Prince George's County School Board, Lawyer Carroll Beatty and his wife. She kept this job for three months short of fifty years. During her adult years, Alverta was a member of North Brentwood A.M.E Zion Church. This was her first passion; working as the chairperson of the hospitality committee and arranging trips for Sunday School.Alverta had three more passions; cooking, fashion, and travelling. She was very fortunate to have been able to visit many cities in the U.S. and travel abroad. There were many adversities in Alverta's life, yet she always managed to think positively about the outcome of any dilemma facing her. After mulling over the situation, she always said she would cross that bridge when she came to it. Even when her health began to fail and she was confined to a nursing home, the "bridge" remark was repeated several times. Alverta has finally crossed the bridge." She leaves to mourn her passing an extremely devoted son, Thurman Plater (Eudora), a grandson Carlos Platter (Monique), two great grandsons, Isaiah and Jeremiah Plater, a sister Roberta Commodore, a loving cousin Mary Fletcher (Albert), a devoted cousin Calvin Freeland (Thelma) , and a life long friend, Shirley Williams for 86 years. And several other relatives and many friends.
