Obituary for ALLEN ERNEST REYNOLDS

An extraordinary life has come to its end. After a long and arduous battle with cancer, Allen Ernest Reynolds, 69, returned to his Maker on December 28, 2020, while at home in Prince Frederick, MD.

Allen was born to Mary and Brooke Reynolds in Prince Frederick, MD on May 22, 1951. It was for him a source of personal pride and comfort that he was born at home, on the farm where he was raised, and that he was able to return to that same land to build a new home where he would reside from 1999 until his passing. His life was one of service, beginning with his enlistment in the U.S. Army in 1969. After serving three years, he returned to Maryland and pursued his education, which culminated with a doctorate in psychology and a Maryland license as a Clinical Professional Counselor. He served his community as a therapist, an advocate, an administrator, and a mediator, working tirelessly on behalf of those who were most vulnerable: children, the aged, and those suffering from disabilities and mental illness. Much of his work was done quietly, without fanfare, and its true breadth is known only to those closest to him. Privately, his kindness extended to those not related by blood, at times creating bonds so strong that he was able to stretch and redefine what the word “family” meant to him. Most notable was his bond with Dhimitri Gross of Lexington Park, MD, who was a daughter to him throughout her life, and who remains a much-loved member of his family.

Allen might have been best known for his love of Harley Davidson motorcycles: he was a reliable riding companion and rarely passed on an opportunity to get out on the open road. He had a passion for antiques, restoring a 1962 Panhead that he rode for decades. For a time, he rode a Harley police motorcycle with a sidecar, referring to it as “the family mini-van” because it allowed him to ride with his wife and youngest son together. His joy and humor were a constant, whether working, riding his beloved bikes, raising a garden, playing his electric bass, or spending time in prayer. His was a life well-lived, with a generosity of spirit and a buoyancy that will be remembered by all those whose lives he touched.

Allen is survived by his wife, Camille Reynolds of Prince Frederick, MD; his sons Allen Reynolds II of Baltimore, MD, Jason Reynolds of Washington, DC, and Christian Reynolds of Prince Frederick, MD; his siblings, Frank (Karin) Reynolds of Kolbermoor, Germany, Charlotte (Robert) Clark of Prince Frederick, MD, Linwood (Lucille) Reynolds of Prince Frederick, MD, and Clifton Reynolds of Bowie, MD; former spouse and friend Isabell Fulmer Reynolds of Oxon Hill, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to count. He is predeceased by his parents Mary and Brooke Reynolds, and his brothers Sherwood Reynolds and Raymond Rice.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Calvert Hospice. A public celebration of his life will be held later, after pandemic concerns have subsided.
