Obituary for ALICE G. PLATER

ALICE GILBERT PLATER, 86, of Sunderland, MD passed away on March 1, 2011 at Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring, MD. She was born Alice Gilbert on December 14, 1924 in Limestone Co., Alabama. Alice was the youngest of 9 children born to the late William and Gentry Gilbert. All of her sibling preceded her in death. She peacefully entered eternal rest on Monday, March 1, 2011 at 12:20am at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD.
Alice's education was obtained from the Limestone County Public School System in Leggtown, Alabama.
Alice left home at an early age to obtain employment in Louisville, KY. While living there she met her "soul-mate" Wardell W. Plater who was serving in the United States Army. They were married on April 8, 1944 in Fort Knox, KY. From this union they were blessed with 9 children.
Alice heard about the Gospel of Jesus Christ at Bethel Way of the Cross Church by the late Bishop Jacob Green. The words of life pierced her heart and soul and lead her to be baptized in the precious name of Jesus Christ in 1961. She later received the gift of the Holy Ghost. In 1996 she moved her membership to Mount Gethsemane Holiness Church in Huntingtown, MD under the leadership of Bishop Robert Watts.
After the baptism of the Holy Ghost and fire, Mother Plater became actively involved in various ministries within the churches that included the Kitchen Committee, Noon day Prayer, President of the Missionary Board, Senior Choir Member, Faith Five Singers, Altar Worker, and must important FAITHFUL, FAITHFUL to the household of Prayer, even with her handicap or some may say disability being blind, did not stop her from always saying how good the Lord has been to her. Mother Plater favorite songs: Amazing Grace and This Old Building.
As well as being a full time mother, grandmother and wife, she also provided her services in many capacities. Mother Plater enjoyed reading her bible, unable to read the bible her granddaughter Margo provided the bible on tapes, so you see, she did not have a disability, she had a determination to always have the word planted in her heart. She also enjoyed canning, sewing, cooking, gardening, traveling and spending time with family and friends. As a strong believer of family spending time together she hosted a few of the Gilbert family reunions at her home. Everybody knew, especially Casaundra and Gloria, that Thanksgiving Dinner was going to be at her house, because she would start off saying ," if I could see"; and we knew the rest, so we start contacting the family to let them know what time dinner is being served. All the children, grandchildren would bring their special dishes that mom provided them with her recipes.
Mother Plater was a loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, as well as a second mother to her nephews whom resided next door to her. Alice and Willa Mae were not only sisters-in-law; they were best friends and neighbors.
Mother Plater will be sorely missed by all who knew her, because to know her was to love her. She leaves to cherish her memories: two devoted daughters, Casaundra (Nathaniel Easton), Gloria (Elder Caroll Spriggs); seven sons, Eugene (Gurlene), Terry (Alice), Elsworth (Regina), Dwight (Monica), Wardell (Cheryl), William (Gloria), Scotwyn Plater (Virginia); one sister-in-law Willa Mae Plater; Learlean Cannon, her niece whom she grew up with as a sister; forty grand- children; fifty great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews cousins, and her church family and friends.
Alice was a mother to many. To name just a few of her many special friends would include Teressa Mackall, Julia Freeland, Darlene Harrod, Rose Collins, Mother Ethel Adams, Emma Easton, Carrie Hall, Annie Mackall and Evelyn King.
